We shot this sometime in early 2004… I think. It must have been, because we filmed Amped that summer, if I remember correctly. So yes, part of this blog is really just me documenting old projects and trying to preserve the hazy timeline of what we did back then.
This short film only runs about two and a half minutes. I think it was something we put together as a warm-up before Amped — a little experiment to get comfortable with the Super 8 camera ( I never used that format again.) Even in 2004, Super 8 was long an anachronism, but back then there was still a lively debate about digital video versus film. This was before 24p video became the standard, so the argument for shooting on actual film had some merit at the time. Looking back now, though, it feels like a quaint debate — with today’s technology, you can make digital footage look like anything, even Super 8, and most people would never know the difference.

I wrote this story quickly, keeping it simple so I could focus on testing how the Super 8 stock looked. I had to record the sound separately, which was a pain, and honestly, I wasn’t crazy about the Super 8 film results — it came out really grainy. Still, it’s a unique little entry in my filmography, and there’s a certain nostalgic charm to it.
We shot it at my old house — my old bedroom is the set. Next door there was an abandoned house, and we filmed a lot of material in that overgrown yard. I really miss those times: when I was still figuring it all out, experimenting, and just shooting for the joy of seeing what came out of the camera.
