Early Life & Athletic Background

Before he ever laced up boots, Josh Briggs was an athlete in pads. He played football at UMass after starting out at Glendale Community College in Arizona. His size, strength, and field presence foreshadowed his eventual role as a big-man enforcer in pro wrestling.

When injuries ended his gridiron career, Briggs turned to wrestling—bringing with him the hard-hitting, smashmouth style of a lineman in open space.

EVOLVE Wrestling (2016–2020)

Briggs came to national attention in EVOLVE Wrestling, one of WWE’s partner promotions at the time. Standing nearly 7 feet tall, he was pushed as a monster-in-the-making.

  • 2019: Defeated Austin Theory to become EVOLVE Champion.

  • 2020: With EVOLVE’s closure and WWE purchase, Briggs became the final EVOLVE Champion, cementing his name in indie history as the promotion’s last top titleholder.

WWE Career

Signing & Breakout Tournament (2020–2021)

  • August 31, 2020: Reported as one of the wrestlers signing with WWE after the EVOLVE purchase.

  • July 2021: Competed in the NXT Breakout Tournament, losing to Carmelo Hayes in round one.

Tag Team with Brooks Jensen (2021–2023)

  • Formed an unlikely but popular babyface tag team with Brooks Jensen in NXT 2.0.

  • June 22, 2022: In a major surprise, Briggs & Jensen won the NXT UK Tag Team Titles, becoming the only non-European team ever to hold those championships before the brand merged back into NXT.

  • Held the belts until the closure of NXT UK, making them the final champions.

Singles Run (2023–2024)

  • The partnership dissolved in late 2023. Briggs received a boost when JBL endorsed him on NXT television.

  • Teased heel turns but balanced between arrogant powerhouse and conflicted ally.

  • NXT Stand & Deliver 2024: Competed in a North American Title triple threat with Dijak and champion Oba Femi, falling short.

  • Later feuded with his former partner Jensen, culminating in a No Disqualification loss thanks to interference from Shawn Spears.

Team with Yoshiki Inamura (2024–2025)

  • During his Pro Wrestling NOAH excursion, Briggs teamed with powerhouse Yoshiki Inamura. The duo brought a bruiser tag style back to NXT.

  • They earned an NXT Tag Title shot but fell short at Vengeance Day.

  • After Inamura returned to Japan, they reunited briefly—but in July 2025, Briggs turned heel by betraying Inamura, ending their alliance.

Pro Wrestling NOAH – N-1 Victory (2024)

In summer 2024, Briggs represented WWE NXT in NOAH’s N-1 Victory tournament, alongside Tavion Heights.

  • Finished the A-Block with 10 points, tied for first, but lost a tiebreaker to Kaito Kiyomiya.

  • Trained in Japan under Keiji Muto and Naomichi Marufuji, further refining his powerhouse style.

Legacy-in-Progress

Josh Briggs’s career has been defined by lasts and firsts: the last EVOLVE Champion, the last NXT UK Tag Champion, and the first American big man from NXT to enter NOAH’s N-1 tournament. His blend of football aggression, indie polish, and Japanese experience now sets him up as one of NXT’s most unpredictable heavy-hitters—whether as a bruiser tag specialist or a singles powerhouse.
