Adria Dawn was born on May 24, 1974, in Champaign, Illinois. She is an American actress, filmmaker, and acting educator whose career spans television, film, and socially focused media production. She is best known for her role as April Tuna on Ryan Murphy’s cult television series Popular, which aired from 1999 to 2001. Her performance earned her recognition as one of the most daring female characters on television at the time.

Dawn continued her collaboration with Murphy several years later, appearing in three episodes of Nip/Tuck in 2006 as Parker, a self-styled Scientology expert. Her television work includes recurring roles on 7th Heaven, Felicity, and NCIS, as well as appearances on a wide range of series including Judging Amy, Boston Public, Medium, My Name Is Earl, Campus Ladies, Help Me Help You, Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, Chicago Fire, and Chicago Med. She also appeared in the made-for-television political drama Running Mates.

In film, Dawn has appeared in both independent and studio-backed projects. Her feature film credits include Beneath Loch Ness, the fully improvised comedy Man of the Year, Stephen J. Cannell’s Dead Above Ground, Dimples, Teenage Ghost Punk, The Drunk, Uncle John, Hunter, and An Ideal Candidate. She has also been featured in numerous short films, including Golden Showers, Lucy, In the Paint, Bozonova, Breathing Above the Tree Line, Vince: The Punctual Vagrant, Town Hall, and Starfield Tectonics, often working in experimental or character-driven storytelling.

Beyond acting, Dawn has built a parallel career as a writer, director, and producer, focusing on films centered on social awareness and civic engagement. Through her work with Revealing Media Group, she has created a series of short films addressing issues such as bystander intervention, exclusion, online behavior, peer pressure, and public safety. These projects reflect her commitment to using media as a tool for education and social change.

Dawn is also the executive producer and star of Dorkumentary, an award-winning, improv-based comedy series created through Tarleton/Dawn Productions. The series ran intermittently from 2008 to 2018, releasing seven episodes over a decade. In 2017, Dawn and collaborator David Tarleton expanded the project into a live performance format with Dorkumentary LIVE!, presented as a variety-style stage show in Chicago.

In addition to her creative work, Dawn is an established acting teacher. She has taught on-camera performance at institutions and studios including Acting Studio Chicago, The Performers School, Tarleton/Dawn Productions, The Actors Centre in London, and Columbia College Chicago. Her teaching emphasizes authenticity, improvisation, and actor-driven storytelling.

Adria Dawn’s career reflects a balance between performance, education, and socially conscious filmmaking, marked by a willingness to explore unconventional roles and to use storytelling as a means of cultural engagement.
