Anne Dudek (born March 22, 1975) is an American actress known for her work across film, television, and theater. She has built a career playing sharp, often complicated characters, gaining recognition for roles in House, Mad Men, Big Love, Covert Affairs, and the comedy film White Chicks.

Early Life and Education

Anne Louise Dudek was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Newton. Her father worked as an architect. She attended Newton North High School before enrolling at Northwestern University, where she studied theater and began developing her stage career.

Stage and Early Career

While still a student at Northwestern, Dudek began performing in professional theater productions. She made her Broadway debut in Wrong Mountain in 2000 and earned critical acclaim for her stage work, including a Connecticut Critics Circle Award for her performance in The Glass Menagerie. Her early success onstage established her as a serious dramatic actress before she transitioned to screen roles.

Television and Film

Dudek’s first major television breakthrough came as the lead in the British comedy-drama series The Book Group, which aired on Channel 4 and received strong reviews. After returning to the United States, she became a familiar face on television through a wide range of guest and recurring roles.

She appeared on series such as Friends, How I Met Your Mother, Desperate Housewives, Six Feet Under, Bones, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Charmed, ER, and Psych. Notably, her characters on both Friends and How I Met Your Motherwere memorably dumped on their birthdays.

Dudek gained widespread attention for her role as Dr. Amber Volakis on House. Introduced during the show’s fourth season as one of the doctors competing for a permanent position, her character—nicknamed “Cutthroat Bitch”—became a central figure in one of the series’ most emotional story arcs. Though the character was killed off, Dudek continued to appear in later seasons as a hallucination and returned for the series finale.

She also played Francine Hanson, the perceptive next-door neighbor on Mad Men, and Lura Grant, one of Alby Grant’s wives on Big Love. In 2010, she joined the cast of Covert Affairs, further solidifying her reputation as a strong supporting television actress.

In film, Dudek appeared in The Human Stain alongside Anthony Hopkins and portrayed Tiffany Wilson in the comedy White Chicks. Her later television work includes appearances on NCIS: New Orleans, Rizzoli & Isles, and a recurring role as scientist Tracy Brand on The Flash.

Personal Life

Dudek married artist Matthew Dana Heller in 2008. The couple had two children, a son born in 2008 and a daughter born in 2012. They divorced in 2016.
