Ann Cusack (born May 22, 1961) is an American actress and singer known for a long-running character career in film and television. She has appeared in films such as A League of Their Own (1992), Multiplicity (1996), The Informant! (2009), and Sully (2016), and has been a frequent guest star across a wide range of television series spanning several decades.

Early life

Cusack was born in New York City and raised in Evanston, Illinois. She comes from a family deeply rooted in the arts. Her mother, Ann Paula “Nancy” Cusack, was a mathematics teacher and political activist, while her father, Dick Cusack, was an actor, writer, and producer. She is one of five siblings, including actors Joan Cusack and John Cusack.

Along with Joan and John, Cusack trained at the Piven Theatre Workshop in Evanston, an influential center for actor training grounded in improvisation and ensemble performance. She also studied music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, reflecting her parallel interests in acting and singing.

Acting career

Cusack made her feature film debut in 1992 with A League of Their Own, playing Shirley Baker in the baseball comedy-drama. She followed this with a supporting role in the 1996 comedy Multiplicity, starring Michael Keaton. That same year, she joined the cast of the sitcom The Jeff Foxworthy Show, replacing Anita Barone and remaining with the series until its conclusion.

In 1998, she starred in the Lifetime television film Maggie. Over the years, Cusack has built a reputation as a dependable and versatile character actress, appearing in an extensive list of television series. Her guest and recurring roles include appearances on Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, One Tree Hill, Charmed, Ghost Whisperer, The Unit, Boston Legal, Bones, Frasier, Ally McBeal, Criminal Minds, Private Practice, Castle, Fargo, Better Call Saul, The Boys, and The Good Doctor.

In 2002, she appeared in Star Trek: Enterprise in the episode “Carbon Creek.” She had a small role in Grosse Pointe Blank, starring her siblings John and Joan, and later appeared in Accepted as Diane Gaines, the mother of Justin Long’s character. Other film roles include What Planet Are You From? and Ace Ventura Jr: Pet Detective, in which she played Melissa Robinson Ventura, the mother of the title character.

Cusack portrayed Helen Ruber in the science-fiction miniseries The Lost Room (2006) and appeared in the second season premiere of Fargo in 2015. In 2016, she played Donna Dent in Clint Eastwood’s Sully, starring Tom Hanks. She also had a recurring role on Better Call Saul as Rebecca Bois, the ex-wife of Chuck McGill, appearing across multiple seasons.

Music

In addition to acting, Cusack has pursued music throughout her career. In August 2021, she formed the musical group Ann Cusack and the Generation Jones Band, serving as the band’s lead singer and frontwoman.

Overview

Ann Cusack’s career reflects longevity and range rather than stardom-driven visibility. Moving fluidly between comedy and drama, film and television, acting and music, she has carved out a steady presence as a character performer whose work often strengthens ensembles rather than competing for the spotlight.
