Rebbeca Marie Gomez (born March 2, 1997), known professionally as Becky G, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress whose career spans pop, hip-hop, reggaeton, and regional Mexican music. First rising to prominence in 2011 through YouTube cover videos, she has since become one of the most commercially successful and versatile Latin artists of her generation, earning multi-platinum certifications, major award wins, and international chart success across several genres.

Early Life

Becky G was born in Inglewood, California, the eldest of four children of Mexican-American parents. The family experienced financial hardship during her childhood, at one point living in her grandparents’ converted garage in Moreno Valley. Determined to help support her family, Gomez began working part-time at a young age and pursued opportunities in commercials, voiceover work, and short films.

A self-described “old soul,” she decided at age nine to pursue music professionally. After facing bullying in public school, she transitioned to homeschooling while writing songs, teaching herself guitar, and recording covers and original material. Posting these to YouTube eventually led to a meeting with producer Dr. Luke, who signed her to Kemosabe Records.

Career Beginnings (2011–2015)

Gomez first gained industry attention through collaborations with will.i.am, Cody Simpson, and Cher Lloyd. Her mixtape-era tracks and early singles—including “Becky from the Block”—established her bilingual appeal. She released her debut EP Play It Again in 2013, followed by a breakout hit the next year: “Shower,” which reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned multi-platinum RIAA certification.

During this period she also toured with Demi Lovato, Katy Perry, and J Balvin, and appeared on the television series Empire, contributing music to the soundtrack.

Crossover to Latin Music (2016–2020)

Pivoting to Spanish-language music in 2016, Gomez found massive success in the Latin market with the singles “Mayores” (with Bad Bunny) and “Sin Pijama” (with Natti Natasha). Both became global hits and helped establish her as a leading figure in urbano and reggaeton.

Her 2019 debut album Mala Santa was certified septuple platinum (RIAA Latin) and charted on the Billboard 200. She also made her feature-film debut as Trini, the Yellow Ranger, in the 2017 film Power Rangers, becoming one of the first queer superheroes portrayed in a major studio film.

Mainstream Breakthrough and Genre Expansion (2021–present)

In 2022, Becky G released her second studio album, Esquemas, which topped the Latin Pop Albums chart. Its single “Mamiii” (with Karol G) became her highest-charting U.S. hit, peaking at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Continuing to explore her Mexican heritage, she released Esquinas (2023), her first album influenced by regional Mexican music. Its single “Por el Contrario” became her first No. 1 on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart. Her 2024 album, Encuentros, debuted in the top 15 of the Top Latin Albums chart.

Beyond music, Gomez launched her beauty brand Treslúce Beauty in 2021 and has continued acting, voice work, and brand partnerships.

Accolades

Becky G has earned:

  • 2 American Music Awards

  • 1 iHeartRadio Music Award

  • 9 Latin American Music Awards, including the Extraordinary Evolution Award

  • The 2023 Billboard Women in Music Impact Award

  • Nominations for 5 Latin Grammy Awards and a Billboard Music Award

Personal Life

Gomez is of Mexican descent, with family roots in Jalisco. She maintains close ties to her heritage and frequently advocates for Latin representation in media and politics. She has spoken publicly about her experiences with bullying, early financial hardship, and the importance of mental health. In 2017 she revealed she has an older half-sister from her father’s side.
