Early Life and Background
Joseph Curtis Hennig, born October 1, 1979, in Champlin, Minnesota, is the son of the legendary professional wrestler Curt “Mr. Perfect” Hennig and grandson of Larry “The Axe” Hennig. Growing up in a wrestling family, Curtis had a strong foundation in the sport from a young age. He attended North Hennepin Community College, where he earned an Associates of Science degree in business computer systems and management, balancing his education with his passion for wrestling.
Independent Circuit (2007–2008)
Before joining WWE, Hennig honed his wrestling skills by training under Brad Rheingans, Harley Race, and his father, Curt Hennig. He made his wrestling debut in 2007 for World League Wrestling (WLW), where he gained some early success, including a nine-month winning streak. He later moved on to wrestle for other promotions, sharpening his in-ring abilities and establishing his reputation as a talented wrestler.
WWE Career
Developmental Territories (2007–2010)
Hennig signed with WWE in 2007, initially wrestling under his real name Joe Hennig in WWE’s developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). In FCW, he became a FCW Florida Heavyweight Champion and FCW Florida Tag Team Champion multiple times. During this period, Hennig also formed alliances with wrestlers like Brett DiBiase and competed in several tag team title bouts.
In 2010, Hennig joined the WWE NXT show, performing under the ring name Michael McGillicutty. Despite not winning the competition, McGillicutty quickly transitioned into WWE’s main roster, where he became part of the villainous group The Nexus, debuting at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view in October 2010. This marked the beginning of his active role on WWE’s main shows, where he and fellow Nexus member Husky Harris disrupted matches and aligned themselves with Wade Barrett.
The Nexus and Tag Team Success (2010–2011)
McGillicutty’s time in The Nexus involved a series of impactful storylines, including feuds with John Cena and Randy Orton. After CM Punk took control of the Nexus, McGillicutty and David Otunga won the WWE Tag Team Championship from Big Show and Kane in May 2011, with the help of other Nexus members. However, their reign was short-lived as they lost the titles to Air Boom (Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston) a few months later.
Curtis Axel and WWE Intercontinental Championship (2013–2014)
In 2013, after being repackaged as Curtis Axel, a tribute to his father and grandfather, Hennig started a new chapter in his WWE career. He paid homage to his family’s wrestling legacy, incorporating his father’s iconic persona into his new character. This led to him winning the WWE Intercontinental Championship in 2013, where he defended the title with pride and enjoyed a renewed push.
In 2018, Hennig aligned himself with Bo Dallas, forming The B-Team. The duo went on to win the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship, marking a highlight in his tag team career. However, despite these accomplishments, Hennig’s time with WWE ultimately came to an end in April 2020, marking the conclusion of his active wrestling career.
WWE Producer Role (2022)
In April 2022, Hennig returned to WWE but in a different role as a producer, helping in the backstage production of matches. He stayed in this role for a few months before moving on to other ventures.
Personal Life and Legacy
Curtis Hennig is well-regarded for carrying on the Hennig family’s rich legacy in wrestling. He has appeared in multiple wrestling-related shows and is remembered for his contributions both as a singles wrestler and a tag team competitor. Though his time in WWE was filled with highs and lows, his Intercontinental Championship win and the formation of The B-Team stand out as key moments of his career. Curtis has carved out his own path while honoring the legacy of his legendary father and grandfather.
