Kamala Devi Amesur (October 8, 1933 – November 29, 2010) was an Indian-born American actress whose brief but notable film career in the late 1950s and 1960s included several high-profile roles in Hollywood productions. She is best remembered for her screen appearances opposite actor Chuck Connors, who later became her first husband.

Early Life

Kamala Devi was born in Bombay (now Mumbai), British India, to a culturally mixed family. Her mother, Elizabeth, was of English-Welsh descent, while her father, Chandumal Amesur, was a Sindhi Hindu and a respected head-and-neck surgeon. She grew up in India in an educated, cosmopolitan household and was exposed early to both Eastern and Western cultural influences.

By the early 1960s, her parents continued to reside in Bombay, while Devi relocated to the United States to pursue an acting career. She settled permanently in the U.S. in 1960 and became a naturalized American citizen in December 1966.

Career

Kamala Devi made her film debut in 1958 in Harry Black, an adventure film starring Stewart Granger. Though her role was relatively small, the appearance introduced her to Hollywood audiences and established her as a striking new presence at a time when actresses of South Asian heritage were rarely cast in mainstream American cinema.

Her most prominent role came in 1962 when she starred as Teela, the wife of the legendary Apache leader, in Geronimo. The film starred Chuck Connors in the title role, and Devi’s performance brought her both visibility and personal significance, as it marked the beginning of her relationship with Connors.

In 1964, she appeared in the fantasy-comedy The Brass Bottle, playing Tezra, a harem girl and jinn. The role leaned into the exoticized casting conventions of the era, but it remains one of her more recognizable screen appearances.

Despite her early promise, Devi’s acting career remained relatively short, and she gradually withdrew from the film industry after the mid-1960s.

Personal Life

Kamala Devi met Chuck Connors during the filming of Geronimo. Their relationship attracted considerable media attention, particularly because Connors was already a well-established star. They married on April 10, 1963. The marriage lasted nearly a decade before ending in divorce in 1972.

Later in life, Devi married Maurie Beaumont in 2005. That marriage ended with Beaumont’s death in 2008.

Death

Kamala Devi died on November 29, 2010, in Arlington County, Virginia, at the age of 77. Though her film career was brief, she remains a noteworthy figure for her presence in Hollywood during a period when actresses of Indian origin were rarely seen in American cinema.
