Scream Queens & Their Directors

Patricia Belcher is an American film, stage, and television actress celebrated for her sharp comedic timing, commanding presence, and a long career filled with unforgettable authority figures—judges, doctors, lawyers, government officials, and occasionally a psychic who sees a flesh-eating demon coming from a mile away. She is widely recognized for her recurring roles as Mrs. Dabney on the Disney Channel sitcom Good Luck Charlie and as U.S. Attorney Caroline Julian on Bones. Her film résumé includes standout roles in Jeepers Creepers (2001), 500 Days of Summer (2009), Bad Words(2013), Kajillionaire (2020), and Gatlopp (2022).

Early Life

Belcher was born in Helena, Montana, and is of African American descent. Before she became known for landing some of TV’s most memorable deadpan reactions, she put her quick mind to use as a contestant on Jeopardy! Though she didn’t win—losing to five-day champion Ron Black—Belcher’s appearance hints at the dry wit and intelligence that would later define her screen persona.

Career

Known to casting directors as a natural for no-nonsense professionals, Belcher has built one of the most recognizable character-acting careers in modern television. She has appeared in dozens of hit shows, including Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond, Boston Legal, The Proud Family, The Middle, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Sister, Sister, How to Get Away with Murder, and In Plain Sight. Her ability to shift from stern to unflappably funny made her a reliable scene-stealer.

Her breakthrough in film came with Jeepers Creepers (2001), where she played Jezelle Gay Hartman, a psychic whose warnings prove horrifyingly accurate. The film became a surprise box-office hit and remains one of her most recognized roles.

Belcher joined the cast of Bones in 2006 as the formidable Caroline Julian, a U.S. Attorney with a biting sense of humor and a talent for keeping the Jeffersonian team in line. She appeared in the role until 2017 and became a fan favorite.

In 2009, she played Millie, the greeting-card company boss in the romantic dramedy 500 Days of Summer, a role that showcased her comedic instincts once again.

Belcher also earned laughs as Janet S. Crotum, the blunt and bureaucratic head of human resources on Better Off Ted. After that series ended, she took on another recurring role—Estelle Dabney, the cranky neighbor of the Duncan family on Good Luck Charlie. The sitcom ran for four seasons and brought Belcher a new generation of fans.

Her later work includes roles in Bad Words, Dark House, and the acclaimed independent film Kajillionaire. She has also remained active in television, including recurring appearances on The Villains of Valley View.

In addition to her on-screen roles, Belcher has contributed her voice to video games, most notably playing Chimamanda Lobo in Dead Island: Riptide.
