Early Life

Delany was born in New York City, the daughter of interior designer Mary Burnett Welles and John Joseph Delany, CEO of Coyne & Delany Co. She grew up in Stamford, Connecticut, and attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, before majoring in theater at Wesleyan University. Delany was involved in theater from a young age, performing in productions such as South Pacific in high school and Fefu and Her Friends during her university years.

Career Beginnings

After graduating from Wesleyan, Delany moved to New York where she worked in daytime soap operas like Love of Lifeand As the World Turns. She also appeared in commercials. In 1980, Delany began performing in Broadway shows and off-Broadway productions, including the play Blood Moon in 1983, where she garnered critical acclaim.

Breakthrough Role: China Beach

Delany’s breakthrough came with her starring role as Colleen McMurphy in China Beach (1988-1991), a series about the lives of women during the Vietnam War. Her portrayal of the complex, strong-willed nurse earned her two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The role brought her widespread recognition and solidified her as a prominent actress of the 1990s.

1990s: Film and Television

Following China Beach, Delany starred in films like Light Sleeper (1992), Tombstone (1993), and Fly Away Home (1996), and continued her television career with roles in series such as Exit to Eden (1994) and True Women (1997). Delany also became known for her voice acting, lending her voice to Lois Lane in several Superman and Justice League animated series, a role she would reprise for many years.

2000s: More TV Roles and Desperate Housewives

In the 2000s, Delany appeared in several short-lived television series, including Pasadena (2001), Presidio Med (2002-2003), and Kidnapped (2006-2007). She also had a supporting role in Desperate Housewives (2007-2008), playing Katherine Mayfair, a role that earned her acclaim and recognition.

Body of Proof and Later Career

Delany starred in Body of Proof (2011-2013), playing Dr. Megan Hunt, a neurosurgeon turned medical examiner. The show was popular, though it was eventually canceled after three seasons. She continued appearing in television, including a notable role in Hand of God (2014-2017), and in 2018, she was cast in The Code (2018) on CBS.

Personal Life

Delany is known for being private about her personal life. She has never been married and has no children. She has been an advocate for health issues, including supporting the Scleroderma Research Foundation and serving on its board.
